What Music’s Going to be Playing at The Hong Kong Sevens?

3 Day Party on Gorillas

Imagine you’re the Hong Kong Sevens Stadium DJ for the rugby. What tracks would you play?

Playlist from HK7s DJ Simon Southgate

Think about it….the pressure’s on, there are 40,000 spectators expecting you to up your game versus what went on last year, and there are you fumbling around trying to find some good tunes.
Well, the Hoff´s coming this year, so that should give you a breather..

And apart from that, at least you’d have the old HK7s favourites out there that are guaranteed to get at least 15,000 people in the South Stand up off their backsides.

We run through a few of the tracks you are bound to hear. DJ Simon Southgate is Your Man behind the sounds. You can check out one of his HK7s playlists here on Spotify.

1. Jump Around- House of Pain
Do you know how many pints of beer are drunk at the Hong Kong 7s? Over 300,000. And most of that will be spilt when the DJ fires up “Jump Around”. Don’t believe me? Test it out for yourself with a plastic glass and let me know how you get on.

2. Gangnam Style
Like it or loath it, it doesn’t really matter. You’ll be doing a horsey dance by 5pm on Saturday anyway. You’ll be walking around like John Wayne speaking fluent Korean by Sunday.

3. The Lonely Goatherd.
Seems a strange choice, right? The Sound of Music classic? Well, if you haven’t been to the Sevens before, you might just be surprised at the reaction. The freaky thing is, I have seen people who seem to know all the words.

4. Sweet Caroline
Neil. He’s a Diamond Geezer to #HK7s folk. DJ Simon Southgate started this one off.

5. I Like to Move It
Just played “Jump Around”? See how much beer you can cause to be spilled under the clock when you stick on “I Like to Move it”. It’s your choice whether you end up looking like the hippo or the lemur.

6. We are The Champions
If you can still speak after yelling your way through the Cup Final on Sunday, then it’s time to unpack that air guitar, head up to the mike and belt out some Queen.

7. Lonely Boy, Black Keys
Remember that cool HK7s ad when all the fans were spinning passes through Causeway Bay? Well the backing track was Lonely Boy from Black Keys. Great Song.

Got any favourite songs you want to hear at the Sevens? Comments please…
