One of the things that amazes us at the Hong Kong Sevens, is the vast quantities of liquid consumed during the tournament, much of it of the alcoholic variety. When you see this video of the infamous HK7s South Stand, you can kind of see how it happens.
We’re here for the rugby in the main, and yes, we do enjoy a cold one at the game. But those are big jugs Ma’am! It got us wondering, exactly how much beer is drunk at the Hong Kong Sevens over 2 and a half days?
Here´s a good infographic (below) from CNN that puts the number even higher at 320,000 pints. So that’s 8 pints per person, roughly speaking. When you take into account the amount of kids and teetotallers at the ground, that’s an awful lot of “bei-jow”.
Oh sorry, did we mention the 60,000 glasses of Pimms and 10,000 glasses of wine?
According to @discoverhk, the beer consumption at the Rugby Sevens accounts for 3% of HongKong’s annual alcohol intake.

So, is this a good thing? Well, economy wise, visitors to the HK7s will blow roughly HK$300 million in the city, so the locals are happy.
In the main, the tournament is incredibly good natured. And it’s very well organised.
